Media Representation and Stereotypes
Media Representation and Stereotypes ♡
Stereotypes
defining individuals in ways which suggest that their behaviour, attributes or identity is 'typical' because they belong to a social group or category (such as gender, race, age, class, religion, ethnicity)
often stereotypes have negative connotations
eg: dumb blonde
shelter, reggie yates - stereotypes
1) which stereotypes are represented?
black people are deviant and involved in crime
south asians are corner shop keepers
therapists are female
2) explain how the micro-features are used to represent some of the stereotypes?
there is a close up shot of the main character's (who is black) ankle tag/monitor
tense and slow editing when he is reaching in his pocket, making characters believe is will commit a crime (knife crime)
3) how does the director subvert stereotypes?
young boy looks up to the man (who is black) and views him as an inspiration - contrasts to how others view him, and fulfil the stereotype
4) in your opinion does he successfully challenge stereotypes?
I think he does challenge these stereotypes, but in a way where he focuses on the struggles faced by black people, making viewers more aware of the stereotypes they may place on ethnic minorities.
